Focusing on the Moment

In life, it is crucial that we maintain our presence and conscious awareness. In our modern life, there are so many distractions around us that takes our focus off of the present moment. In this article, I will share some of my favorite tried and tested tips.

  1. Eliminate clutter from your surroundings. Especially from your most common living and work spaces. Clutter distracts us by being in the way, bringing up old memories and feelings that we do not necessarily need to relive in this moment, and reduce the overall feng shui of the environment, and thus has an effect on your energetic state! A clean and clear work and living space helps you to remain focused on the task at hand and to tame a wandering eye. It’s okay to have a desk ornament or two, but no bobble head collections in your prime money making real-estate!

  2. The Habit of Present Awareness. At times we are so enthralled within out thoughts, feelings, memories, emotions, and to-do lists that we forget to stop and notice the moment. To take the time to check in with our bodies in the present. To observe our surroundings and consciously breathe it all in? When we take a step back from the rush of life, we notice things we never took note of before. Sometimes, the answers to our problems are sitting right in our faces. Or we may have the realization as to why we have a certain pain in our body. If we are constantly pouring our attention onto the world outside of us, we will miss the inner work that can be done to help overcome life challenges and expand our consciousness with new life experiences.

  3. Aromatherapy. How many times have you smells something so strong, you HAD to stop to take a whiff? Like freshly bloomed peonies on a walk, or the scent of fresh baked bread beckoning you into your friend's kitchen upon arrival. You can use scent to help you tap into your own conscious awareness. I personally choose essential oil diffusers over burning scented candles or plugging in synthetic room fresheners, as both can agrivate the sinuses, and thus take your awareness off the present moment, the opposite of our goal. Perfumes can work also. Choose a scent that’s right for you, and train your brain to focus on the present moment while you inhale.

Maintaining your presence is key to knowing what steps to next take in life to better ourselves. I highly encourage all people to cultivate personal awareness of themselves and their situations. I’ll be sure to drop some more tips soon.
